The Great Return (2026)

SYNOPSIS

The Great Return follows the personal journeys of four families as they return to Karabakh after 30 years of displacement. For these families, the act of going home is far more than a physical relocation – it represents a reconnection with memory, identity and a landscape that shaped generations before conflict forced them to leave in the early 1990s.

Their stories unfold at a pivotal moment, as large-scale reconstruction efforts by Azerbaijan are underway to rebuild towns, infrastructure and community life in a region profoundly transformed by decades of tension and war.

Through close, character-driven storytelling, the film documents the emotional terrain of homecoming: the anticipation of rediscovering long-lost places, the shock of seeing familiar landmarks changed or gone, and the challenge of starting anew amid an evolving environment. While the reconstruction provides a significant backdrop – new homes rising, roads and public services being restored – the focus remains firmly on the human experience.

As the families navigate the practical and psychological realities of return, The Great Return explores universal questions: What does “home” mean after decades away? How do individuals rebuild a sense of belonging in a place altered by conflict? And what does it take for a community to reconstitute itself after such a long absence?

By documenting this transition as it unfolds, the film offers both an intimate portrait of resilience and a rare real-time look at post-conflict recovery. The Great Return aims to spark a wider understanding of how displaced communities rebuild their lives, and how societies attempt to heal after prolonged separation and loss.

In a world where conflict-driven displacement is rising, the experience of these families carries lessons far beyond the Caucasus region. Their resilience speaks to communities in Gaza, Ukraine and countless other places waiting for the chance to rebuild.
